Get involved!

Saturday, October 23, 2010

Two blog posts in 24 hours, very unlike me! The reason for this post is that I woke up this morning to 126 new emails, loads of new tweets and facebook messages. After wondering what the hell was going on I realised that the BBC interview I had done for their website had gone live cue lots of lovely comments and feedback on it. You can find it here if you haven't had a read. Its fantastic to have so many new people get in touch and say the article made them sign up and to read all my tweets and comments of support. Hello new readers! *waves to you all*
I thought I would post a quick entry as lots of people are asking how to sign up to the organ donor register. You can do it <strong>here online and it literally takes 2 minutes to do.
I'm hoping that some of my new readers may like to become a bit more involved and help me spread the word about organ donation so here are a few ideas to get you started. I'm happy for anyone to use the links to my articles, blog etc if they think it will help.

.Email 10 people (or better yet even more)telling them about organ donation and giving the link to sign up. Ask each of them to pass it onto their friends too.

•Send a tweet asking people to sign the organ donor register and include the link to sign up http://tinyurl.com/ldkrcz

•Tell all your friends on facebook why it's so important to sign up!

•Talk to people in you're workplace about signing up. Put leaflets or a poster in your staffroom to get them interested. You could even set up computers to the organ donation register so they can sign up then and there. Promotional materials can be found here
•Do you write a blog? Why not write a post about organ donation and the difference it can make.

•If you're feeling adventurous take up a challenge event/ make a donation/or have a fundraiser for LLTGL so they can continue their lifesaving work promoting organ donation and supporting transplant patients. Check out their website for more fabulous ideas for getting involved!

It couldn't be simpler to get involved and could literally be the difference between life and death for people like me. Leave me a comment and let us know what you've been up to! I would love to hear your stories and ideas.

  5. Hi Tor,

I'm not on the organ donor register but it is something I've talked with my family about and we all agree it's something we all should be on if the worst happens.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who feel the same way but just haven't signed up or if they have signed up haven't discussed their intention with their relatives.

So after reading your story I'm off to sign up and will be telling my relatives I've done so.

    Good luck!

  7. From a Victoria who's had a transplant to a Victoria who's waiting for one, I'd like to wish you all the best for your journey and hope the waiting isn't too long for you. I will be forever thankful to my donor and his family, who made the decisions that they did. Organ donation is such an important cause. To anyone who's still undecided about signing up - go and do it. Keep fighting x

  9. I think your story, which I read on the BBC, must have hit me during a momentary failure of my rant-suppressant organ.

Let's see if shaming my friends doesn't get at least one of them to sign up :->

  10. Yes, I followed the link from the BBC feature - hello, Victoria. I can only imagine your life right now and you write so well. Of course blogging and tweeting are important to you - it will be a wonderful day when you let the world know a transplant is happening for you.

I cannot go on the list as I have Multiple Sclerosis. My husband has no thyroid following cancer.

BUT every day is a new one and we live one at a time. I will think of you - and many like you - often, and follow your blog posts and tweets. God Bless you. Take care - smile a moment and think "what else can I do!"

  12. Also followed the link from the BBC. Was very moved by your story and I sincerely hope you receive a transplant soon. I'm on the list, it's something I believe in very strongly, precisely because of people like yourself.

  13. Good luck to you - I have been on the register for years and would urge everyone to do the same. My heart goes out to you; I have sadly seen for myself how debilitating CF can be, and I wish you that a donor be found really soon. You are an inspiration, and the people around you are blessed to have you as a friend. Carolin

  15. Like so many others I just found your blog after reading the article on the bbc site today. I'm also twenty-three and after reading the article I've spent the day thinking about how much I take my health for granted. I'm on the donor register but I am going to make sure I bug friends and family now to make sure they sign up to. I will keep in touch with your blog and hope desperately for good news soon.
    Best Wishes.x

I could never have imagined it all to turn out so well. I hope and pray you get the lung transplant soon.
    Best wishes,

  17. Hey Tor,

just a headsup from a fellow CFer! I saw the article randomly on the BBC site. Well done for this blog, it's a great space for you to express something about CF, life and your thoughts. My thoughts and prayers are with you (and of course that you get the transplant).

You're inspiring me to nag everyone about getting on the donor list...

    All best,

  20. Hi Tor,

I work as a theatre nurse in one of the centres in the UK that undertakes heart and lung transplantation(not at your centre sadly!). I because of me jon, have a massive interest in increasing awareness of organ donation. Reading your blog has been a hugely interesting and inspirational insight into the lives of people waiting on the transplant list that before I have only been able to imagine. I often only see a transplant patient at that moment in the anaesthetic room where they are about to be put under and I think people being able to hear your experiences really shows the true bravery you and these other people go through. I now intenet to be a regular reader of your blog (thanks bbc!) and I wish you all the best with all your awareness work and hope that soon you get that call where you finally end up in that anaesthetic room! Take care xx

  21. Just wanted to say - thank you for highlighting organ donation and to wish you all the best and strength during your wait. I am one of the lucky ones - I am 14 years post transplant, still have CF but my transplant transformed my life. My gratitude to the donors family is unexpressible, but I value every day still. My husband and I live on our narrowboat and travel the country. We have a page about organ donation on our site and I blog about our journeys. www.nbepiphany.co.uk God bless and I hope the wait is not too long now.

  27. Hey Tor, I just saw your BBC story that a friend linked me. GOOD LUCK with finding a donor match really soon! A few of my friends have CF so I love to hear good stories about CF patients fighting for life.

  28. Your courage and fight is so inspirational, I am a student nurse currently searching for my specialty and I am so inspired by what I have read about you and your life. It is so important that people become aware of the struggles that people face when they are in need of a transplant and how much organ donation can mean to so many people. Every day I will hope that you and so many others have the strength to keep fighting and that luck will come your way, and that I can become the greatest nurse I can to deliver the best possible care to people like you xx

  29. Hiya Tor, you persuaded me to sign up to the donor list, just done it now! should have done it ages ago.

You probably know by now, but you should be so proud of what you've achieved, how many people can say they did so much good in terms of raising awareness etc? Best of luck, for someone with so much spirit I think things will turn out OK for you! x
